My Process

This section is to show how my process and work flow. A lot of the time I will start with the a rough sketch in a sketchbook then I turn it into something digital. I work to make it readable to not only myself but other so I am able to get feedback. I've been told, by a professor, I start really rough and tighten up as I go. Which is very true!! A lot of my ideas come to me quick so I have to work fast to get them down. As time goes on, I need to change them to work within a restraints and/or direction that they need to go in. For me, its better to start loose so I am able to mold and shape as needed! Enjoy this little section dedicated to seeing how I creatively work.

This is a redesign of a Pantomime by Laura Lam. The book series was a favorite from when I was younger though, I never really liked the book covers I bought!
The story itself is not period book but I took time to do some research on what time period the book takes place for the designs. I wanted it to feel dangerous and dynamic to match the characters internal struggles and mystery throughout the book. Since main character lives in circus and they are acrobat I wanted to play with the balance and fear the character has. There is magic present in the book as well so, I played to play with a unnatural but vibrate color palette. After a lot of going back and fourth, zooming in and help from a friend on text placement- I am very happy with the result. The uncertainly of the falling or flying, the colors and even font placement make me very happy! The sweat droplets are my favorite!!

This was a Spread page that was designed to be educational about an animal of my choosing. I picked sturgeons that I recently learned a lot about. They are an endangered species- which was also a requirement.
I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas of how to spread of the information and lead the eye around. When thinking of a target audience a friend reminded me of Ranger Rick, a kid friendly education animal magazine. I wanted to take that approach and keep things educational but fun.
Normally, I work with unrealistic colors or characters so this came as a challenges in ways I wasn't expecting. I focused on the visuals mainly. Text would be helpful as well but I wanted to use this as a visual exercise. If it were present the smart sturgeon, in the bottom left, would be explaining to the reader what is happening on the infographic! The smart lil guy is easily the best part of the image.

Artist's Bio

I grew up in the state of Indiana but now am based in Charlotte, North Carolina. I moved here because I am currently attending University of North Carolina in Charlotte as I pursue Illustration major and Japanese minor. I especially enjoy character design and concept art. I mainly work digitally but from time to time, I’ll work with acrylics and alcohol markers to make art traditionally.
